The Resistance of the Antirachitic Substance in Cod Liver Oil to Reagents.*

چکیده

The present communication records the first of a series of experiments begun at the suggestion of Professor E. V. McCollum on the chemical examination of antirachitic substances. The most familiar of these substances occurs in cod liver oil, and is commonly known as the antirachitic vitamin, or vitamin D. The cod liver oil which I used was an unfrozen, unadulterated oil, rendered at Bay Bulls, Newfoundland, in August, 1923. 0.20 to 0.25 per cent of this oil, incorporated with the McCollum high calcium, rickets-producing diet, No. 3143, induced advanced healing in rachitic rats in 5 days. The animals were examined by the Shipley line test procedure. The samples of oil treated with reagents were similarly triturated with Diet 3143, acetone being used as diluent. In the following records of experiments a somewhat detailed account of procedures is given. The protocols of the individual rats, however, are combined in one self-explanatory table (Table I). The rats receiving the curative preparations were kept in a moderately lighted room.. Influence of Hydrogen Dioxide on the Antirachitic Vitamin.Mellanby (l), McCollum, Simmonds, Becker, and Shipley (2), and Goldblatt and Zilva (3) have demonstrated that hot cod liver oil does not readily lose its antirachitic activity when aerated. In the present experiment I investigated the stability of the antirachitic vitamin to hydrogen dioxide-a reagent which with

Experimental Rickets in Rabbits

Rickets has been produced experimentally in rabbits by the administration of diets deficient in the antirachitic organic factor and phosphorus but with a high calcium content. Cod liver oil added to these rickets-producing diets prevented the development of rickets in rabbits.

A Study of the Antimony Trichloride Color Reaction for Vitamin A. Ii. the Dilution Curve of Cod Liver Oil with Antimony

In a previous paper of this series (1) we have shown that while the dilution curve for cod liver oil with antimony trichloride is not a linear function, a comparison can be made between the colorimetric assay of vitamin A in certain fish oils, with a chloroform solution of antimony trichloride, and the biological assay upon the same oils, when certain precautions are taken. In a second paper (2...

Cli. Studies on the Chemical Nature of Vitamin A. by Jack Cecil Drummond,

EFFORTS to isolate and to determine the nature of the substance known as vitamin A received a great impetus when it was definitely established that the compound may be concentrated into that part of such substances as cod-liver oil which resists saponification [Steenbock and Boutwell, 1920; Drummond and Coward, 1921]1. Owing to the instability of the vitamin in the presence of substances tendin...

Recent progress in enzymology and molecular biology of enzymes involved in vitamin D metabolism.

The early studies of Huldschinsky (l), Mellanby (2), McCollum et al. (3), Steenbock and Black (4). Askew et al. The culmination of these investigations was the isolation and identification of vitamin Ds as the antirachitic factor followed by elucidation of its bio...
